Maserati historian Adam Ferrington has the following to say about the cars:
The "new" 3 litre cars which appeared from 1933 onwards are usually referred to as 8C-3000s, but they actually were just the same (re-used) 26M chassis fitted with a 3 litre engine.
In all cases the chassis into which the 8C 3000cc engine was fitted was the same chassis as used on the previous 2500cc and 2800cc 26Ms even when Maserati was presenting/selling them as new cars
with new chassis numbers. As far as can be ascertained, nowhere in the official factory papers does the designation "8C 3000" appear. Given all of the above the "8C-3000" nomenclature is really something of
a myth, despite it appearing in various reference books.
The 3000 cc engine had the same block as the 2500cc and 2800cc engines. The move up from 2500cc to 2800cc involved a wider bore, whereas the move from 2800cc to 3000cc involved a longer stroke.
For 1935 one engine was even further enlarged to 3200cc.
Chassis numbers for the monoposto Maserati 8CM started with #3005 so that should reserve numbers #3001 - 3004 for the offset-seat 26M 3000cc cars but there seem to have been at least four 26M chassis
fitted with an 3000cc engine plus a sole engine that had its own number:
- #3001 works car in 1933, sold to Scuderia Siena for 1934.
- #3002 sold to Tim Birkin in 1933.
- #3003 engine only, was sold to Luigi Premoli for his hybrid racecar BMP (Bugatti Maserati Premoli).
- #300? raced by Gruppo Genovese San Giorgio in 1934
- #300? raced by Piero Taruffi at Monaco 1934, then by Goffredo Zehender at Montreux 1934, with a four cylinder
2500cc engine, then raced by Zehender, fitted with a 3000cc engine from Montlhery 1934 onwards.

The 8CM chassis are an extremly complex matter to sort out.
This small list is just an attempt to create a base for further discussions.
3001-3004 were of type Tipo 26M (8C-3000) and there was no car with number 3017.

In 1939 the cars were only entered for the German GP. After that they were sold to
Lucy O'Reilly Schell, who entered them for the Swiss GP and then went with them to USA in 1940.
There the cars were entered in Indy 500 until the 1950s under a multitude of owners.
Chassis 3032 was sold to Wilbur Shaw who dominated the Indy 500 1939 and 1940 with the car and
led the 1941 race until having to retire.
The 8CL was similar to the 8CTF but the engine was based on two 4CL sixteen-valve units.
Two cars, #3034 and #3035 were built. #3034 was raced by Argeninian Raoul Riganti at the 1940 Indy 500.

Transmission: | 4 speed gearbox |
Chassis: | box section side members |

Year: | 1936-1938, 5 cars built |
The 4CM engine had a higher torgue than the 6CM and had therefore ought to have an advantage on twisty circuits. So some 6CM car/4CM engine combinations were built.
On 1936 a 6CM chassis was equipped first with a 2.5 litre then with a 4C-1500 engine. The car was raced by the works team.
In 1937 László Hartmann ordered a similar car. In 1938 Paul Pietsch, Armand Hug and Ettore Bianco bought 6CM cars of latest model with 4 cylinder engines.
Also 4CL/16 valve engines were fitted into three 6CM cars in 1939.
For chassis details and victories see 6CM below.
